- Enjoyed parts of the book but found it crushingly detailed.
- If you don’t know much about India or its history…
- you will be buried under a pile of names and
- places that will mean nothing to you.
- After 25% …I just skimmed the book, excruciatingly boring.
- It was a soulless history an 200 pages too long.
- Doesn’t anyone have a red pen at Bloomsbury Publishing?
- You can dislike a book for any variety of reasons,
- but in the end it comes down to a matter of opinion,
- and opinions can differ from person to person.
- So, if you are interested in history
- …read the book and perhaps you might like it.
- I did not.

This is rather interesting. I have been thinking of reading Dalrymple and the reviews seem very positive but you have not enjoyed it. What led you to choose this book? Were there other reasons besides the detail that spoilt your enjoyment?
I found the book on Obama’s Reading List Favorite Books 2019.
I trusted his judgement.
What did I miss? analysis
What annoyed me? pages of pointless details (numbers of soldiers and/or elephants) –
that did not add to my knowledge/scholarship of this subject.
I had high hopes about this book….also because of stellar reviews.
I wanted to learn more about the England-India connection.
Please, as I added in the review, this is just my opinion.
If you can get the book from the library….give it a go.
You can always return it.
