#Total Lockdown….first in Europe against Omicron
by NancyElin

- The Netherlands is…
- …last to start booster program
- first in…FULL LOCKDOWN in Europe
- 19 Dec – 14 Jan 2022…and probably longer.!
- Omicron infections are to double every 1,5-2 days.
- Will …Santa be able to visit us?
- That is still in doubt…after another year
- still NO herd immunity.
News conference last night and our PM Mark Rutte was visibly shaken by the tsunami Omicron that is on the horizon. He said this is The MOST serious moment in the pandemic crisis for us. Health care workers are stretched to the limit and are ready to snap!
Total lockdown started 2 hours ago…here in The Netherlands. Everything…and I mean everything is cancelled.
Let this sink in— worldwide cumulative #Omicron spiked up Upwards arrow 31% in just **one day**. You can try to delude yourself that a slightly “milder” virus won’t kill many people — but only if you lie to yourself about how exponential math works.
PLEASE …anyone not protected…, please get the vaccine!!
I’m cancelling my Xmas dinner with friends (…I had all food ready in freezer and my wine cave was filled to the brim). My vaccine jabs are waning…and my booster ( one of the lucky …to get one!) will kick in as of two weeks after jab on 12 December. The #Omicron wave will hit hospitals hard—pray for doctors, nurses & respiratory therapists over the holidays. #MaskUp #VaxUp #GetBoosted and Stay safe …stay @home.

Stay safe Nancy, thinking of you xo
XO
Oh my goodness Nancy. I can’t tell you how envious I am. Omicron is rampant here and our doofus of a Premier is dawdling. Probably waiting to shut us down on Christmas Eve. You are wise to choose to be boosted and careful. Let us hope Ontario will follow today because tomorrow may be too late!

So happy to live in NL where the gov’t is finally trying to get a jump on this variant.
Stay safe in Canada!
I so agree with Mary Lee. I read that was happening in the NL. I too am boosted, but remain cautious. I wish people would vaccinate. Stay safe my friend!
It really is scary…
It has to sink in…if one might need health care for accident or whatever…will there be a bed available in hospital? Difficult decision to make to cancel Xmas dinner…but I just cannot take the risk if people are not vaccinated. Individualism did not defeat Delta and it won’t defeat Omicron or the rest of the Greek alphabet to come! It’s time people start thinking more about the “collective WE” instead of the self-interest, self-defeating “ME”. Stay at home…enjoy your movies and cooking….hopefully Spring will bring better times. XO
Stay safe, I’m glad you have strong leadership that is actually doing something. We’re being extra careful although we didn’t stop being careful in the first place! We’ve both had our boosters 2 weeks ago, thank goodness.
Liz, I’ve heard from a few other friends in Canada, USA..that are envious of our draconian measures to break the spread of infections. You can’t vaccinate yourself out of the pandemic…you have to stop the spread with total lockdown at the same time. But many countries are not willing to do that.
It gives the NL government some time to get the boosters to people who need them. We’ve a population of 17,5 million
85.8% are fully vaccinated (18 year or older)
Hello! Fellow Dutchy here! This precautionary lockdown makes complete sense to me. Rather safe than sorry. I think it’s the right decision. I will only have my parents over for Christmas, so that is ok to go ahead. I hope to get my booster in January. My friends in the UK want more measures, but are not getting them, eventhough cases are rocketing there! Stay safe!
We’ve been through this before (total lockdown) and will survive again!
I hope NL can show how it feels to act responsibly and get ahead of the “covid curve”. Poor Boris Johnson…he must make the right decision for public health…even if it costs him his job!
As I said….many friends in US are actually jealous how well this is going, even though we see the speed bumps experienced close up. No matter…let’s get life a bit back to normal this Spring! Thanks for your comment!
I heard about this yesterday but I think lockdown is the best option, all things considered. We came back from Berlin to New York a week ago, terrible timing as it’s getting so bad here. I got my booster but my husband’s not eligible for another month, it’s making me so nervous. Glad you’ve got your booster and hope you can ride out the lockdown as pleasantly as possible. Stay safe and healthy!!
My nerves are at a new level…ordered N95 upgrade face masks just to make sure I am really protected if I do venture out. The Netherlands is setting a lockdown trend that I think other countries will follow as a “circuit-breaker” against the spread of the virus. UK is now in high alert talks to decide what Boris Johnson is going to do. It feels like “damned if I do, damned if I don’t lockdown. At the moment Incan’t concentrate on my reading…jus like March-April 2020.
So I open the New Yorker Magazine to look at cartoons, read a profil piece, book review or short fiction. Stay safe in NY….it’s going to be another strange holiday season!
