6 Weeks No Books!

- Well, for the first time in my life I was sick of reading books!
- So I abandoned the blog…threw my Kindle reader in the bookcase and
- …bought a 4 week (July) unlimited travel train pass for The Netherlands!
- It was the best thing I ever did to beat the “book blues”.
- It freed me from reading lists and book challenges.
- I walked at least 300 km sightseeing, to and from train stations.
- I travelled 2000 km (1243 miles) visiting:
- Groningen, Franeker, Workum, Amsterdam, Haarlem, Maastricht
- ...Velp, Zutphen, Zwolle, Utrecht and Arnhem. (see Google Maps)
- What did I learn? Travelling is a “full body workout”!
- I was so exhausted I could not travel during the last 2 days of the month.
- I had reached my sightseeing, going out to dinner and drinking coffee with lots of cake
- …saturation point.
- So here I sit…. “vermoeid maar voldaan” (tired but satisfied)
- … in my comfortable reading chair and getting ready for
- …the coming “reading ” months!

Wh
Wh? What are your trying to say?
:-D
What an absolutely glorious respite for your brain!!! I wish we had something like that sightseeing by train adventure here! Thanks for sharing those wonderful pictures!
I remember how much I enjoyed your photos of the road trip with Heidi and Stefi from Arkansas to California! Marilyn was such a good girl on the trip! Yes, there is an extensive train network here in The Netherlands and in most of Europe. Thanks for your comments and now I have to make my reading list for August!
P.S. I see that we get cake and a cookie (biscuit?) with our coffee!!!!!
Cake AND a cookie…died and gone to heaven!
Goodness, wonderful travels, but did you read nothing? I think I’d go weird in the head if I do that (but I appreciate not everyone needs to read every day).
I read only travel guide books! But now it is back to “business as usual”. Actually I’m looking forward to starting my reading list tomorrow. I still have to decide where to start!
I so enjoyed all your travels!! Brings backs wonderful memories!! Where is next on the travel log?
Staying home for the next 2 weeks…it is going to be hot summer weather and I’d rather like to enjoy the summer sitting in my backyard with a coffee, cake and a book! First real trip I ASD 16 Augustus…lunch reservation.
I so enjoyed your travels!! Brings back many wonderful memories!!
I know….at times you were there with me…in Maastricht!
I so enjoyed your travels!! Brings back many wonderful memories!!
I have a few more places to visit in Aug-Sept-Oct-Nov and Dec….but not the
every day trips as in July! So stay tuned for more updates!
Can’t wait!!
That’s a very good reason not to read books! And I hope it was as refreshing as it sounds!
It really was refreshing! I’ve discovered some nice places in my province of Friesland…dat serve the most delicious coffee and “patisserie” …..I don’t even have to travel to Vienna for Sacher Torte! (see photo).
Wow! You don’t do things by halves! But what a fabulous way to spend a month – playing tourist in your own town/city/region can be such fun. Looks like you had good weather for it and those cakes!! Lovely to see a pic of you in the mix too :-)
Just before Covid we had a flood at work and I couldn’t go in for a couple of months, so I bought a Sydney Museums pass which gave me access to all the heritage houses and farms around Greater Sydney that I had been meaning to visit but never had. It was a wonderful month playing tourist esp. as Covid lockdowns happened soon after.
Travelling is fun…but also physically demanding! I stayed in a hotel in Maastricht and had to walk u 32 steps, with shoulder bag luggage to my room! I checked in with a 120 heartbeat! Whew. I saw many older people struggling with baggage, staircases, train platforms, trains and even elevators! You have to be able to withstand the demands of sightseeing. I’m glad I took this break….I feel refreshed and very comfortable in my reading chair drinking my coffee @home! I have a few small trips scheduled until the end of the year.
I had to google to see where Maastricht is on the map. One of the Maigret books I read in July was set in Leige which I see is nearby. Did you cross the border into Belgium?
Glad to hear that you a feeling refreshed, and obvioulsy fit and healthy. Bravo!
Thanks for you comment….no I did not cross the Belgian border this time. I plan to visit Antwerp soon…it is just a 3 hr 50 min train ride!
