Terry Pratchett: Nation

- Author: Terry Pratchett
- Title: Nation

Conclusion:
Nation is a fantasy novel set in an alternate universe.
Ermintrude (Daphne) and Mau are washed away by a
tidal wave and survive on an island in the Pelagic Ocean.
Much of the plot concerns these young people
cooperating for survival reasons.
Explorers from Europe vs native tribes living isolated on islands.
You have to be patient and try to enter Pratchett’s world…
because it is a story with many strange characters plot twists that
are baffling!
Mau and Daphne:
“One person is nothing…two people are a nation”
Grandmother:
“…keep her away from the sherry, do everything she says
…and we might all live.”
Lesson learned:
Don’t drink your beer before you spit in it and
…sing Ba-Ba-Black Sheep 16 times!
Last thoughts:
- Be prepared to concentrate
- …because Pratchett has created a bizarre
- world on a Pelagic Ocean island!
- The author has filled Nation with stinging
- Strong point: social commentary about kings, bishops
- the planting of British flags in foreign countries
- …and the real decision makers in the government
- …the Gentlemen of Last Resort
- I would recommend using an audio book.
- Through the voices the story and the
- quirky characters come alive!
- This was the novel Terry Pratchett felt most proud of.
- It was my first Pratchett book
- …and I loved it!

Just reading anything that came my way!
Oh right! Reading off piste, bravo. I’m doing that with Antoine Laurain’s latest translation, some laugh out loud moments in the opening pages.
I still have not read him…..I remember your reviews of his books a few years ago. I’m always on the mood for a ‘laughing out loud’ moment!
Short, quirky novellas, great light reading and so French :)
:)
I am so glad you liked it! As you know I hero worship Pratchett and to me he is one the wisest men who could make a social commentary laugh out loud funny!Hope you get read some of his other works!
There is more to Terry Pratchett than meets the eye!
Yes, I hope to read more of his writiings….but which one to start next?
You could try one of Discworld novels – I started my journey with Maskerade – a very very interesting take on The Phantom of the Opera!
