- Thanks to the heads up by Emma @ WordsandPeace
- and Brona @ This Reading Life
- I’ve decided to read some SciFi (not my genre) in November.
- What have I got to lose?
- Science-fiction is like Jazz…
- with a devoted but limited audience of followers.
- But why does a science-fiction movie become a blockbuster hit like StarWars
- …while a science-fiction book occasionally
- …breaks into the best seller lists!
- Time to do some research…with my morning coffee
- ….and find some great books to read in November!
Dragonflight – Ann McCaffery (2005) 320 pg

- She was inducted by the Science Fiction Hall of Fame on 17 June 2006.

- Anne Inez McCaffrey (1 April 1926 – 21 November 2011)
- was an Irish writer known for the Dragonriders of Pern science fiction series.
- She was the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction.
Exhalation – Ted Chiang (2019) 368 pg
- Ted Chiang is a master of combining relevant
- technological and philosophical events and ideas
- …with wonderfully realistic fiction

- Ted Chiang (born 1967) is an American science fiction writer.
- His work has won four Nebula awards, four Hugo awards,
- the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, and six Locus awards.

And here it starts, already adding scifi to be huge TBR, and November is not even here, lol.
I didn’t know about Anne McCaffrey. When I see a dragon, I usually pass, as I don’t like fantasy, but I’ll trust your opinion that is real scifi, not fantasy.
Chiang’s book is already on my TBR. I have so enjoyed his short story collection Stories of Your Life and Others. For once, I read it because of a movie. I was so fascinated by the movie Arrival (maybe my favorite first encounter type movie) that I decided I had to read all his stories. Brilliant author.
So anxious to read both of the authors I’ve selected. As you said, I’m not a fan of fantasy but after reading about Ms.McC she sounds like a read Sci-Fi writer…not magical stuff! I’m very glad I stumbled onto this challenge on your blog, I need to widen my reading horizons and who knows?…I may become a regular sci-fi readier!
Neat! And I found it through another blogger, as explained. I’m reading more and more scifi these days. There are some classic gems
I hope to discover some great writers….that I otherwise would have missed.
Dragonsdawn might be a better place to begin rather than Dragonflight as Dragonsdawn is definitely Science Fiction and leads well into the rest of the series. I love them all though.
Thanks for the suggestion…will look into Dargonsdawn. I’ve already started Dragonflgtht!
I hope you enjoy it. It’s one of my favourites but it does read more as fantasy.
Yes, I seem to feel it more fantasy than Scifi. Do you have any favorite SciFi you can reccomend?
One of my favourite Sci fi books is Winter’s Orbit by Evarina Maxwell It’s a stand alone so I really liked that too. https://witchyreading.wordpress.com/2021/11/15/winters-orbit-a-review/
I also loved These Burning stars by Bethany Jacobs which is a brand new release https://witchyreading.wordpress.com/2023/10/23/these-burning-stars-a-book-review/
I hope you enjoy your Sci Fi reads this month
Thanks for these reading suggestions…I ‘ll have a look at them on Amazon and on your blog!
Great..a challenge for one of my favourite genres.Have a whole bookcase of anthologies but always ready for something new!
Thanks so much for your comment!
I will definitely join in. I saw the post at Words and Peace, and since then have had time to think about it, and it would be a great opportunity to catch up with some science fiction on my TBR. I have Ted Chiang’s Exhalation in a stack to read soon anyway.
You are correct that McCaffrey’s series is science based although the first book in the series does not emphasize that. I have read Dragonflight and Dragonsdawn and liked both. I have more of those on my TBR also.
Tracy, why don’t you start a SF blog…or adjust your present blog to review more SF / Fantasy? I could read more SF than mystery. So glad your are joining the challenge…await your sign-up post for #SciFiMonth!
Great choice with Dragonflight. I love this series.
Just started the book this morning!
Thanks for you comment.
Anne McCaffrey is still one I really want to read and I’ve heard great things about Exhalation.
Started the book today and so far…I’m liking it very much.
Science and Fantasy Writer’s Association (SWFA) voted Ann McCaffery a “Grand Master of SF” …..so she must be good!
Thanks for visiting the blog.
Sci-fi Month is always so much fun!
I found a book via another SciFi reader and am excited to see why she gave it 5 stars! This is a whole new genre for me.
