#GermanLitMonth Sign-up post

- First time I’ve joined this challenge!
- Usually I was reading Australian literature
- …during November for #AusReadingMonth.
- That challenge was moved to October
- ….and I have a lot of ‘free reading time’ on my hands.
- French is the language of romance and passion (…reading French novellas for #NovNov).
- Italian is the language of music.
- English is the language of business and social media.
- …so what is the German language about?
- I hope to learn the answer during November!
- Visit the official announcement for all the details
- hosted by @LizzySiddal
- Plan: Four weeks…..4 books.
Feedback: @jinjer
I decided to join #GLM for the first time and celebrate all that is German! I read Dutch daily but it does not qualify for the challenge, too bad. The languages are so similar. I have a few books ready and one in German b/c it is not translated into English and the NL paperback costs 65 euro! I’ll manage with a short German book and a good online dicitonary. Read Buddenbrooks years ago…have fun with T. Mann .

Welcome to #germanlitmonth, Nancy! Just thinking out loud here, you could read Hans Keilson’s novels. A German who wrote in Dutch – he would qualify for rulebreakers week.
Feedback: @nl_burns
What a great reading tip! I found Keilson’s ” Dagboek 1944″.
Diary of the German-born writer, poet and doctor (1909-2011) who went into hiding in Delft in 1944 because of his Jewishness. Looking forward to reading all that is German in November!

Hi Nancy! I’m excited that you’re participating in German Lit Month for the first time! Those first two books sound really good!
The ones that are NOT in English…can you read German? Or are they translated into another language that you CAN read?
…so what is the German language about? — Good question!!! Let me know what you find out!
Jinjer, great to be starting German Lit Month…there are so many writers from Germany I’ve never read. Yes, I can read German but not as well as I do French. So I’m hoping to improve my reading skills as well as enjoy some good stories. (English- Dutch – French- German)
Wow! You know so many languages!!! Impressive!
I love languages….and the best way to learn in read a book (novella perhpas) and keep th online dictionary fired up on the laptop. Slowly but surely one builds up a working vocabulary!
I will try that some time, just to see how far I can get.
You said you used to live in the US, right? Can I asked when did you move to the Netherlands and what prompted you to do so? If you’ve already told me, I can’t find your response. If it’s none of my business, that’s fine, too. I’m just curious.
Left USA 1972 to get married to a Dutchman…it’s as simple as that! :)
Probably make for an interesting book?
Nancy how are you? I’m fine. Had hip surgery in January still not right. Miss your posts on Facebook.
Patti, that’s good and bad news! Hip surgery should be a “piece of cake”…my replacement too 25 min in operating room and I was home the next day!
Hope you are having a follow-up x-ray done with your doctor to see what the poblem is. I ‘m scheduled for a 2nd hip replacement in 2024, our waiting list is 6 months. All good here…reading a lot books as you can see. Do have a look at my “monthly planin”…there must be something you’re interested!
Your various and complementary reading projects inspire me. I also appreciate your tendency towards making lists. I’ve not read a lot of German authors but I did enjoy a short novel by Theodor Fontane about a cross-class love affair so I’m intrigued by the idea of this novella you’re aiming for this month.
Truth be told…I’m fluent in Dutch so German should not be a problem. But…I’m in love with the French language and have a link on the sidebar “French writers”. Now it is time I start “German writers”. Thanks for placing your comment…I’m looking forward to #MARM with you and other readers! Lists? They re-charge my battery when I feel I’m searching for something to read. It helps me focus…and they are fun to research and make.
I’ve read several books by Fontane, but not this one – I wonder how it’ll go…
My review will tell it all!
